Are we loosing touch with our ability to connect with people because of our love for technology? Too often we think technology is the solution and overlook the implications to people or that people might be the solution.

According to one study from Deloitte Consulting 89% of employees are not passionate about their work. When an organization introduces recognition into its culture, it can positively influence employee passion.

Employee recognition, however, needs to be done right or it becomes a flavor of the month, a management fad, that damages instead of improves passion and employee commitment.

In today’s episode my guest Roy Saunderson and I look at how to get employee recognition right.

To humanize the workplace means we must humanize how we relate to and sell to customers. Gone are the days where a marketing campaign can manipulate customers to buy from a business. Customers buy based on what other customers say about a business.

Today customers want to know the humanity of a business. What is that though?

My guest is Jim Blasingame, author of The Age of the Customer. We explore what the humanity of the business is, how a business can be relevant and other shifts in the age of the customer.

The way we lead our organizations is changing. We need less command-and-control and more collaboration, community and connection. The shift away from traditional masculine values of leading are giving way to feminine values. And this shift is creating innovative and more relevant businesses.

I explore this shift with my guest John Gerzema as we explore his New York Time’s Bestseller, The Athena Doctrine: How Women (and the Men Who Think Like Them) Will Rule the Future.

Essential to doing work that matters is clarity in direction of the organization. This is the role that strategic planning plays in providing clarity. But a strategy itself doesn’t equate to winning or clarity.

In this episode of Work That Matters, I explore with Rich Berens, President and Chief Client Fanatic at Root Inc, the key factors that position a business’s strategy to guide actions and inspire behaviors that make strategy more than analysis, measures and metrics and tactics.

Too often employees ideas are choked by organizational bureaucracy or by the employee’s manager. Such unfortunate realities limit employee performance, and, consequently organizational success.

In this episode, Drs. Alan Robinson and Dean Schroeder, authors of The Idea-Driven Organization, explain in detail and in simple how-tos what leaders can do to unlock employees' ideas. Such leadership can improve employee morale and engagement by showing progress and demonstrating commitment to using employee ideas and insights to improve the business.
